The Problem

The platform carrying the group's financial reporting launched in 2024. Within months, the people who owned the reports had a consistent list of complaints: navigation settings were lost from one report to the next, filters moved position each time, layouts were cluttered, and visual styles were inconsistent.

Constrains & Approach

SAP Analytics Cloud sets hard limits on what can be customized, so every decision had to be expressible in the platform's own features and implementable by a single developer.

Execution & Key Decisions

  • 1:1 Sessions with around ten people, each responsible for a different section of the same report. The priorities came back identical across all ten, simpler navigation, a consistent visual language, fewer steps to reach a figure, and the removal of filters no longer in use.

as-is
  • UI Kit for Handover: Typography, color and components documented as guidelines for the developer, scoped to SAC's available features so nothing specced was unbuildable.

  • One Navigation Model: A single navigation bar across the whole suite, where the old version had no equivalent at all.

  • Filters as a Fixed Block: Unlabelled chips scattered along the top of each report became labelled dropdowns, grouped in one block, in the same position on every report.

  • Changed What Charts Open On: The PVFCF chart now opens on the full waterfall, already split by driver, with increase, decrease, subtotal and total color-coded and totals shown alongside.

  • Think-Aloud Validation: Took the redesign back to the same users on an interactive prototype.

Impact

  • The redesigned reports are live.

  • The deliverable outlived the project: the UI defined here is now the standard for SAC reports produced by EY for this client, so the work sets the baseline for reports beyond the ones in scope.
